Rethink Waste Secret # 27 ~ “Recycle”

Recycle: to treat or process (used or waste materials) so as to make suitable for reuse.

A never ending pile of single use plastic bottle

Recycling has long been regarded as an acceptable means of reusing waste, but who are we kidding? … much of our recyclables today, end up in landfill. If we are more savvy with our waste sorting, then only the bare minimum should end up in landfill.

The planet needs a helping hand – we are drowning in waste!

Recycling of single use plastics is NOT the answer! We must Rethink our purchases and put pressure on manufactures to choose reusable , returnable, refillable types of packaging. If our governments put the responsibility of of recycling: on the manufactures, perhaps things would be different?

Recycling of other products that commonly end up in landfill is something we should pay more attention to. Most local councils have collection points and facilities at their refuse collection points. Here are a few items commonly recycled and the suggested recycler:

  • Ink cartridges – PlanetArk (post Offices)
  • Batteries- Local Council
  • Spectacles – Lions Club (Australia)
  • Mobile phones- phone shops
  • E waste- Local Council
  • Mattresses- local council
  • Bread ties – Bread tags for wheelchairs
  • Soft plastics – Redcycle (at most supermarkets).
