Repair: White good waste has escalated over the years as the average age of an appliance plummets to approx 3 years whereas in the 1950’s through to the 80’s, we had appliances lasting 15 years or more. My father still has an operational fridge he bought in 1967. Nowadays the masses prefer to buy another appliance rather than investigate what repairs may be required.
Appliance repair agents are in most towns and can advise on repair costs, but if you have a “Mr Fix it husband like me, he will have the repair seen to in no time.
There is a lot to be said for buying quality over cheapest price. Inferior components can have a limited life span which often renders the appliance useless. White goods have recyclable scrap metal components but few will take the time to dismantle for recycling and then they end up in landfill.
Many councils will collect white goods for recycling in the Kerbside clean ups otherwise scrap metal dealers or local Council recycle centres will take them for recycling.
Repair Cafes are becoming popular community events. Check out this Sewing day at Livewell Tasmania
